Webinar abstract:

Component selection begins during schematic development, when you identify suitable parts and start building your BOMs. However, even a component that meets your electrical requirements can lead to costly design revisions due to parasitic effects, footprint mismatches, or limited routing space.

In this webinar, you’ll learn practical tips for selecting PCB components, verifying footprints, and avoiding common mistakes that can lead to layout and assembly issues.

How to choose the right parts for your circuit board design

When selecting PCB components, verify the lifecycle status and availability. Source parts from authorized suppliers. To prevent assembly delays, ensure your BOM doesn’t include any counterfeit/duplicate components.

For reliability, evaluate load voltage, current, power rating, frequency range, and temperature limits for each component. Avoid operating components at their maximum ratings and select parts with a safety margin.

To prevent overheating and early component failure, assess power dissipation and thermal performance. Consider junction-to-ambient and junction-to-case thermal resistance, and calculate junction temperatures under realistic conditions. Improve heat dissipation by increasing copper area, adding thermal vias, or using heatsinks as needed. Keep junction temperatures well below the component’s maximum rating.

For efficient power delivery, carefully select decoupling capacitors. Consider their ESR, ESL, and self-resonant frequency under DC bias. Choose capacitors that meet your IC’s transient current needs and suppress noise across the required frequency range.

Before designing your PCB layout, verify each component footprint against the manufacturer’s datasheet and recommended land pattern. Check pad dimensions, package size, polarity markings, and pin 1 orientation. Ensure the footprint follows IPC guidance and aligns with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
