Seminar abstract:
This offering is intended for individual sign-up only. If multiple people wish to attend, a separate seat must be purchased for each participant. If we determine that this policy is being violated, we reserve the right to terminate access without a refund.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is fundamentally a systems-level discipline. Decisions made at all levels of design will impact the overall EMC success of the hardware, whether that’s a car, satellite, electronic toy, medical device, etc.
In this one day course we’ll look at some of the key design points where specific decisions can make or break a unit’s overall EMC compliance.
Register now! (1 seat per person)
This will include points related to circuit design, PCB layout and stack-up, and system configurations, including housing and shielding. A lot of the course will discuss electromagnetic fields and controlling where they go–so that they stay in line to make your equipment as efficient as possible and don’t go wandering off to create EMC problems in the lab.
This course is designed for electrical and mechanical engineers, EMC engineers, and any technical professionals involved in the design, testing, or integration of electronic hardware where electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a concern. Whether you’re new to the weird world of EMC or looking for new strategies, this seminar will provide you with immediately useful strategies.
Seminar agenda:
- Choosing the right grounding and filtering scheme during circuit design
- The importance of solid ground planes in your PCB stack-up
- How PCB trace routing can make or break overall EMC performance
- Interconnecting cables and how they contribute to EMC issues
- Shielding
- Electrical bonding
About Karen Burnham
Karen Burnham has worked in and around the aerospace, defense, automotive, and broader consulting world since 1996. She has a BS in Physics, an MS in Electrical Engineering, and a talent for translating EMC to English. She has managed requirements and test planning for NASA and the Dream Chaser spaceship and others. She has done troubleshooting on electric vehicles for Ford Motor Company and others. She has initiated innovative SBIRs and STTRs through government centers and worked on classified programs. She has consulted on projects across a wide swath of industries and sits on multiple international standards committees, landing her in her current role of Vice President of Standards for the IEEE EMC Society. Ms. Burnham founded EMC United, Inc. in 2024 in order to focus on helping companies and hardware designers solve EMC problems, ideally before they even start. She believes that, far from being black magic, EMC can be understandable (and even fun!), and she hopes to spread that passion more widely.
