Seminar abstract:

Electrical designers and engineers are sometimes asked to design their own PC boards. While those engineers may be very well versed in circuit design, they may not design boards often enough to take into consideration all the intricacies required for those boards to work well for part choices and placement needed; impedance, signal integrity and EMI control; routing and signal energy movement through the structure; power distribution issues and concerns; plane and stack-up requirements; production manufacturability, and more.

Some of the issues we will cover in this class are:

  • button icon The electronics and physics involved and why controlling rise time, field energy, and transmission lines are extremely important to signal quality.
  • button icon Signal integrity, impedance and EMI control to make a board that works well the first time.
  • button icon Parts and placement issues, including order, flow, and setting up potential routing to come.
  • button icon The plane and capacitor placement are a large part of power distribution for making sure the parts work as expected.
  • button icon The planes and stack-up structure will also play a major role in the quality of the design for impedance, crosstalk, and noise control.
  • button icon The signals’ routing and their path throughout the board is critical their performance. Fanouts, grids, routing layer to layer, layer paired routing, and spacing will be discussed.
  • button icon The use of HDI microvias, their setup, fanout, and routing for fine pitch and BGA parts.
  • button icon DFM issues that help make the board easily manufacturable and so less expensive.

About Susy Webb

Susy Webb is a senior PCB design engineer with over 45 years of experience. Her career includes experience in coastal and oceanographic oil exploration and monitoring equipment, point-to-point microwave network systems, and CPCI and ATX computer motherboards. Webb is a regular speaker at PCB Conferences, IPC events, international design conferences, and has consulted for individual companies and groups as well for the last 18 years.. Her presentations discuss practical implementation of complex engineering concepts into board layout, and methods to improve the overall design and flow of printed circuit boards. She is CID certified, a former writer/columnist for Printed Circuit Design and Fab magazine, a chapter writer for Clyde Coombs “Printed Circuits Handbook”, one of the writers of the PCB-EDU book and curriculum, and one of the judges for the annual TLA competition. Webb is also an active member of the PCEA Executive Board and education committees, and is a member and past president of the Houston Chapter of the Designer’s Council.
