Understanding space radiation and its impact on electronic components
Warning:
Join us for a cool exploration of space radiation! Unlike our typical technical webinar, this special session is designed for you to kick back and enjoy a fascinating presentation about the origins, impacts, and mitigation of space radiation. Just sit back and let us take you on a journey through space, electronics, and the mysteries of the cosmos!
In this webinar, you’ll explore the origins and sources of space radiation, gaining insight into how these sources differ in their qualitative and quantitative effects. Learn how Earth’s influence affects regional radiation concentration and discover the impact of prolonged exposure on various electronic components. We will delve into the consequences of individual particle strikes on circuit operation, from non-destructive to destructive events, and examine testing methods that assess both cumulative degradation and immediate effects. Additionally, you’ll learn the basics of mitigation strategies to ensure the reliability and longevity of circuits throughout their mission duration. Join us to enhance your knowledge of space radiation and its critical implications for electronic systems.

What you will learn:
- Where the space radiation come from
- The sources responsible and how they differ qualitatively and quantitatively
- How the Earth affects regional concentration
- The effects of prolonged exposure to radiation on different types of electronic components
- In what ways individual particle strikes can affect the operation of the circuits, both for non-destructive and destructive events
- Types of test methods that investigate the cumulative degradation and the immediate effects that single particles cause
- How we can have confidence that the circuit will last for the mission duration
- Basics of mitigation
About Jonathan Riley
Jonathan Riley has been actively involved in electronic systems design since the 1980’s. Starting in high-end module computing, development has taken the route of complex programmable logic and FPGAs and regularly involves PCB design work at 10-20 Gbps. In the last 10 years this has taken a new twist with the development of control systems for constellations of communication satellites and performing the necessary radiation effects analysis. More recently projects have included radiation work in association with the ESA moon mission due to launch next year, and at present he is working on the radiation test campaign for the next generation of communications satellites. He is a graduate of the University of Wales, and is a Chartered Engineer (IET). He is presently the Technical Director of IOT-Routers Limited and M2M Gubbins Limited.
