Last July, Apple’s Carpool Karaoke was nominated for an Emmy in the Short Form Variety Series category. It is official since last night: The company has won the trophy!
Although Carpool Karaoke was far from being praised by critics, it won a Primetime Emmy Award. This is not the first Emmy that Apple receives but it is the first-ever Primetime Emmy for its original video programming.
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards – which recognizes the most impressive guest spots on the small screen as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – will air on Monday, September 17th. However, the trillion-dollar company got the good news last night that it won the prize for Short Form Variety Series. Carpool Karaoke was competing against Between The Scenes — The Daily Show, Creating Saturday Night Live, Gay of Thrones, Honest Trailers, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon – Cover Room.
The Apple series is a spin-off of The Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke, hosted by James Corden. Among the most famous guests who sang in Corden’s car, we have Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus, Will Smith, Trevor Noah, John Legend, Shakira, Seth McFarlane, Ariana Grande, Queen Latifah, and Games of Thrones’ Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.
Carpool Karaoke is just a preview of what the Silicon Valley giant has in store for us. Next year in March, Apple will launch its streaming service. You have probably already heard of some of the most anticipated shows, such as Ronald D. Moore’s (the Battlestar Galactica creator) new space drama See, a 10-episode comedy starring Kristen Wiig, the thriller Are You Sleeping starring Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, and the reboot of Amazing Stories by Steven Spielberg.
Despite the negative reception from critics, Carpool Karaoke, which is available on Apple Music since August 2017, was renewed for a second season. Critics might have spoken but the people’s voice is louder!
